Obesity has been declared one of the major threats to human health in 21st century. Obesity and its associated disorders are a growing epidemic across the world. Many genetic, physiological and behavioural factors play a role in the etiology of obesity. It has become the center of much clinical attention and especially clinical laboratories, whose aim was to reduce this new world syndrome. Chitosan is a derivative of chitin, natural polymer of glucosamine and N-acetylglucosamine derived from the shells of crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters and shrimps. It is one of the most abundant natural polymer after cellulose. And cimetidine is H2 receptor antagonist. The main aim of present study was to evaluate antiobesity activity of cimetidine and chitosan in combination on diet induced obese rats. All the animals were divided into five groups of six mice each. Group I was served as normal control received, Group II received only cafeteria diet. Group III received cafeteria diet and cimetidine (14.2 mg/kg p.o.) for 6 weeks. Group IV received cafeteria diet and chitosan (300 mg/kg p.o.) for 6 weeks and Group V received combination of cafeteria diet and chitosan for 6 weeks. The result shows that cimetidine and chitosan gives beneficial effect to reduce obesity alone or in combination. The result was expressed as mean±SEM and was statistically analyzed by one way ANOVA.
